Criteria for funding projects:
How we work
Our purpose is to fund projects in existing or new services that will
have a direct impact on the lives of infant and pre-school children who
either have been abused, or who are in danger of being abused.
To achieve our aims of alleviating, treating and preventing the abuse of infants and small
children we have devised a simple 4-point plan.
- Medico-social support for abused
children who are taken to a crisis or other centre, through
supporting and training volunteers working in these centres
- Provision of more safe places for
defenceless and abused children particularly orphans and
vulnerable infants/children
- Developing and funding training
packs for community and outreach workers, nursery and crθche
workers, traditional healers and home workers to enable them to
understand, identify and deal with suspected abuse.
- Raising awareness through research and publicity campaigns
We will not fund
- Medication programmes.
- Projects designed to last more than three years without fundamental
review.
- Staff salaries.
Where we work
The infant trust currently [in 2007] works only in South Africa; there
are plans to extend its work to other countries, when that happens a
revised set of criteria for funding projects may apply.
Who we work with
- The infant trust
works with new or already established partner
organisations where we can see that the setting up or continuance of
projects will directly help to improve the lives of children or the
people who care for them
- Our partner organisation[s] must be able to demonstrate that they work
within accepted local and/or national good practice, to high standards
and that they monitor their work regularly
- On an annual basis we set aside 5% of our turnover to offer ad hoc
grants
How we identify projects
- We identify projects to fund either through referral or by direct
contact
- We will only fund projects for a maximum of three years, after that we
expect projects to be either completed or self-sustaining; as part of
the progress reports we will expect to see how the projects can be
bought to a close or become self-sustaining or how additional funding
can/will be obtained.
Monitoring
- We have Service Level Agreements {SLA} with all our partner
organisations; the SLA includes when and how we transfer money, what
monitoring and reporting we expect and how we keep in contact.
- We will soon have a local representative in South Africa who knows and
understands each project. This representative can and may visit any of
the projects at any time
- We expect each partner organisation to utilise what is accepted
current good practice in the field of child care and child protection,
volunteering and training.
Evaluation
- Each SLA has the expected evaluation and assessment criteria and
reporting timetable built in.
- For any development work that involves training we will use the skills
and expertise of international experts in the UK to test the validity of
the programmes; we recognise, however, that there will be several issues
related to our work that will only apply to the legal and/or social
and/or health situation in South Africa
-
We will expect regular reports from each project leader, and we will
post reports of each project on our website and in our annual
report.
